Friendlies into perspective

I've been reading with interest the 'last night I know it was a friendly...' threads and there are many different opinions and ideas on what pre season friendlies are about.
Remember that these games are not ALL about general fitness and match fitness but tactics too.

Friendlies give the management team the opportunity to try out different formations, players in alternative positions and also to introduce the younger players to first team football.

Because of this there are bound to be periods of games where the supposed 'better' team will be inferior due to things being tried out that haven't worked, at least the management then know what not to do in competitive matches!

If several substitutions have been made for fitness reasons you may well end up with a disjointed team where no tactics will work too well as what you have on the pitch is nothing like a 'starting' team you would use for proper matches.

Under these circumstances you will always get freak results in friendlies and that's why IMO the score is pretty much irrelevant (whilst I agree, it IS nice to win!)

Surely the most important thing pre season, bearing in mind new signings, players back from long term injuries etc. is to find out what works and what doesn't?

Agreed, exactly what i have said from the start.

winning matches are a bonus, but as long as the aspects uve metioned are followed, that is the main thing

and also don't forget it provides some folks from strange little towns the opportunity to stand in front of you and sing 'easy easy' and 'Premier League, you're having a laugh' which I found most amusing. I think some Cobblers were under the impression that there were three points at stake!
These friendlies are like 'going' with an ugly woman after a long period without - necessary although the performance is meaningless as it's with inferior opposition and should be viewed as an aid to fitness! Kinda thing! I'll get my coat!

I couldn't agree more.

Just because we lost to Northampton ast night, doesn't mean it's the end of the world.

At least we're not like Vile fans, who believe a 14-0 win against a team of butchers and brickies shows how "great" their strikers are.

all very well saying that..... but we used 2 subs?? and played 4-4-2..... played Martin Taylor at right back, played Clapham in a left wing role with Gray taking up Left Back position.
Clem and Nafti were changed for Anderton and Kilkenny?

all very good if you think that will be happening in the Premiership.

Exactly - I don't think Taylor will be right back nor will Clapham be left wing whilst Gray's at left back.

I don't believe Anderton will be a starting midfielder and Kilkenny is being gently broken in to the first team.

There were a few experiments going on last night and they didn't work. Obviously.

Lunch break.

Some of us work 8 hours and have an hour off in the middle.

Some do it the other way round...

I really hate people who post sensible, considered and balanced opinions.

Why don't you get lost and us normal people can get back to whining and convincing ourselves that we are going to get relegated before the season has even started.

spot on..blues would have been training yesterday and would have used the game for sharpness.
Clapham and nafti played in the midfield so they could have a more exhausting workout and more of the ball.

Yes its nice to win loads of pre season but for most teams you use them for a workout and to develop sharpness. The results are irrelevant.

Exactly. Ive said that its just a preperation for the Season. Results are not important, if there are patches in the tram that need to be sorted out.

No, nor me.
I always start off by assuming the worst and I'm happy when it happens.
The thing that really guts me is when things go well..

Without my regular dose of Blues related misery I have to rely on wearing my eight year old sister's shoes and listening to The Smiths.

To be fair though I've only supported Blues since we got in the Premiership and if we got relegated I wouldn't go down anymore. Next season I might support Chelsea, I'll bet they could have beaten Northampton.
